Privacy Policy
Effective 15 October 2026 · Last updated 16 October 2026
The short version: your journal stays on your phone, and we only keep what your account needs.
- If you create an account, we store your name, email, role and pregnancy week and due date so you can sign in on another phone and keep Pregtionary Pro. Nothing else from the app is uploaded.
- Your journal, photos, bookmarks and quiz progress are stored only on your device.
- We only receive personal information when you place a shop order (your name and delivery address) or buy Pregtionary Pro (handled by Apple or Google).
- Free users see a small number of non-personalised Google ads. We never use your pregnancy details for advertising, and we never sell your information.
1. Who we are
Pregtionary is a pregnancy dictionary and week-by-week companion app for iOS and Android, together with this website (preg-tionary.com). Pregtionary is owned and operated by Pregtionary, South Africa ("Pregtionary", "we", "us").
We are the "responsible party" under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA) and the "controller" under the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for the personal information described in this policy. Our Information Officer can be reached at privacy@preg-tionary.com.
2. Information kept on your device
The following information is created by you and stored only in the app's private storage on your phone. It is not sent to us.
- Your profile picture, if you choose one from your photo library.
- Journal entries, moods, milestones and any photo attached to an entry.
- Bookmarked terms, quiz results, your shopping cart and your recent order history.
Your journal is personal, so we have designed Pregtionary to keep it on your device. Nothing you write or add to it is used for advertising or shared with advertisers. When you choose to share a journal keepsake card, the app opens your phone's share sheet and the card goes only to the app or person you pick.
Because this information lives only on your phone, deleting the app removes it, and we cannot restore it. Your device's own backup service (such as iCloud or Google backup) may include it, depending on your device settings.
3. Information we receive
Your account
When you create an account, we store your name, email address and a securely hashed password (handled by our authentication provider, so we never see your password). We also store your account profile: the role you choose (for example, expecting parent or partner), your pregnancy week and day, your estimated due date, the date you joined, and an anonymous purchase identifier that links Pregtionary Pro to your account.
Your pregnancy week and due date are health-related information. We use them only to show you the right content and to restore your profile when you sign in on another device. They are never used for advertising, never shared with advertisers and never sold.
Shop orders
When you buy a keepsake from the in-app shop, we receive and store the information needed to fulfil and support your order: your name, delivery address, the items ordered, the order total, the date, the payment provider you chose, and an order reference.
Payments are processed by PayFast or Yoco. You enter your card or banking details directly with them; we never see or store your full card number.
Pregtionary Pro purchases
Pregtionary Pro is sold through Apple's App Store and Google Play. Apple or Google processes your payment. We use RevenueCat to confirm whether your subscription is active. RevenueCat receives a random app user identifier, your purchase and renewal history, the store transaction identifiers, and basic device information such as platform, app version and country. We do not receive your name, email address or payment details from Apple or Google.
Content requests
The app downloads dictionary terms, weekly content, quizzes and shop products from our content service. Like any internet request, this reveals your IP address and basic technical information (such as app version and device type) to our hosting provider, which keeps short- lived logs for security and reliability. We don't use these requests to identify or profile you.
Contacting us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to include in your message, and use it only to reply and help you.
This website
preg-tionary.com does not use advertising or analytics cookies. Our web host processes standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages requested and time) to deliver the site and protect it from abuse.
4. Service providers
We use the following providers to run Pregtionary. Each may only use your information to provide its service to us, or as described in its own privacy policy.
| Provider | What it does | Information involved |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Hosts app content, user accounts and shop orders | Account and profile details; order details; IP address and technical request data |
| Google AdMob and User Messaging Platform | Shows banner ads to free users and collects ad consent where required | Device and ad identifiers (where permitted), IP address, approximate location, ad interactions, consent choices |
| RevenueCat | Manages Pregtionary Pro subscriptions | Random app user ID, purchase history, device and app information |
| Apple App Store and Google Play | Sell and bill Pregtionary Pro; distribute the app | Handled under your Apple or Google account terms |
| PayFast and Yoco | Process shop payments | Payment details you enter with them, order amount |
| Expo (EAS Update) | Delivers app updates | Device platform, app version and IP address |
| Courier and fulfilment partners | Deliver shop orders | Name and delivery address |
5. Advertising and your choices
If you don't have Pregtionary Pro, the app shows small banner ads from Google AdMob on the Today and Dictionary screens. Journal, quizzes and the shop are always ad-free.
- We request non-personalised ads. Google may still use device and network information to serve, limit, measure and protect ads, as described in Google's advertising policies.
- If you are in the European Economic Area, the UK, Switzerland or a US state with privacy laws, Google's consent message asks for your choices before ads load. You can change them at any time from Advertising privacy choices in the app.
- Your pregnancy week, due date, journal and other on-device information are never passed to Google or any advertiser.
- Subscribing to Pregtionary Pro removes ads.
You can also reset or limit your advertising identifier in your device settings (iOS: Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking; Android: Settings › Google › Ads).
6. Device permissions
- Photos. Used only when you choose a profile picture or journal photo. The app only receives the photo you pick, and it stays on your device.
- Network. Used to download content, show ads, verify purchases and place orders.
You can change permissions at any time in your device settings.
7. Why we use information
- To fulfil your orders and subscriptions (performance of a contract).
- To run, secure and improve the app and website, including preventing fraud and abuse (our legitimate interests).
- To show ads to free users (your consent where the law requires it, otherwise our legitimate interest in offering a free version).
- To meet legal obligations, such as tax and consumer-protection record keeping.
8. When we share information
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We share it only:
- with the service providers listed above, to run Pregtionary;
- when required by law, court order or a lawful request from a public authority;
- to protect the rights, safety or property of our users, the public or Pregtionary;
- with a buyer or successor if Pregtionary is sold or restructured, who must continue to protect your information under this policy.
9. How long we keep it
- On-device data stays until you uninstall Pregtionary or clear its storage.
- Account and profile data is kept while your account is open and deleted within 30 days after you ask us to delete your account.
- Shop orders are kept for up to five years after the order, to handle returns and meet South African tax and accounting rules, then deleted or anonymised.
- Subscription records are kept while your subscription is active and for as long as needed for accounting and refunds.
- Emails are kept for up to two years after we last hear from you.
- Server logs are kept for up to 90 days.
10. Your rights
Depending on where you live, including under POPIA, the GDPR and US state privacy laws such as the CCPA, you may have the right to:
- ask whether we hold information about you and get a copy of it;
- correct information that is wrong or incomplete;
- ask us to delete it;
- object to or restrict how we use it, including for direct marketing;
- receive it in a portable format;
- withdraw consent at any time, for example through Advertising privacy choices;
- not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
Email privacy@preg-tionary.com to make a request. We will reply within 30 days and may need to confirm your identity first, for example by asking for your order reference. You can also complain to your data-protection authority. In South Africa, that is the Information Regulator (complaints.IR@inforegulator.org.za).
11. Deleting your data
To delete your information:
- Your account: email privacy@preg-tionary.com from the address you signed up with, with the subject "Delete my account". We will delete your account and profile (name, email, role, pregnancy week and due date) within 30 days and confirm by email. Pro purchase records that the law requires us to keep for accounting are kept separately and not linked to your profile.
- Journal, profile, bookmarks and other on-device data: uninstall Pregtionary, or on Android clear the app's storage (Settings › Apps › Pregtionary › Storage › Clear storage). This permanently erases everything the app stored on your phone.
- Shop order records: email privacy@preg-tionary.com with the subject "Delete my data" and your order reference. We will delete your order details within 30 days, except for anything the law requires us to keep, which we will explain in our reply.
- Subscriptions: cancel in your App Store or Google Play subscription settings. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
- Advertising data: reset your device's advertising ID, or ask Google through My Ad Center.
12. Security
Information sent between the app and our services is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Order records are protected by access controls so that only authorised Pregtionary administrators can view them. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information and will notify you and the regulator if a breach affects you, as the law requires.
13. International transfers
Some of our providers store or process information outside South Africa, including in the European Union and the United States. When this happens, we rely on the provider's contractual commitments (such as standard contractual clauses) and laws that give your information an adequate level of protection, as required by POPIA and the GDPR.
14. Children
Pregtionary is designed for adults who are expecting a baby or supporting someone who is. It is not directed at children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
15. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when Pregtionary changes, for example if we add cloud backup. We will change the "Last updated" date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the app before they take effect.
